We believe that there is more to
education than solely acquiring academic qualifications, important though they undoubtedly are.
Our newly-restructured curriculum sets aside one day every fortnight – Enrichment day – so our students can develop the skills that will prepare them for the changing world that they will inherit: they will need to be independent enquirers, creative thinkers, reflective learners, team workers, self-managers and effective participators. Enrichment day is set aside for trips and visits, community activities, mock interviews and similar diverse and interesting activities.
The first E&E Day in September was a Citizenship day with various activities including;
Year 10 – “Speakeasy” Citizenship – Enterprise challenge. Teams of 8 students were challenged to invent a new political party complete with logo, slogan and policies. These were then presented to rest of the year 10 and the winning team awarded £80.
Year 7 – Students were asked to consider a new society following the earth’s destruction under a meteor shower. Students used ICT to collate and present their ideas to the rest of their group. Year 7 students also debated which laws they considered the most and least important and which one they would demolish or amend. Finally they were asked to outline any new laws they would introduce.
Year 7 & 8 students also attended a variety of “Actorshop” theatre performances, guest speakers and workshops around the theme of laws, crime and peer pressure.
Year 11 students attended several workshops organised by the Youth Offending Team, Actorshop and school staff around issues such as gangs, car crime, local democracy and the European Union.
The English department presented an excellent theatre performance “Of Mice and Men” and organised follow up GCSE workshops. There was also the second week of year 11 English master classes.
Economic Wellbeing was the theme of the year 9 day with students engaged in the “Learn to Earn” programme organised by Young Enterprise.
There were also activities outside the school including a year 10 Business group to the BBC Television Centre and a workshop at the local youth centre. A group of year 7-8 students were also setting up a stationery shop in the school.
Thank you to all our visiting performers, speakers, and facilitators and to all the staff at Forest Gate for making the first E&E day a success.
