Forest Gate Community School

Mathematics

All students study mathematics throughout their time at Forest Gate. At Key Stage 3 the four main areas of study are algebra, shape and space, number and data–handling.

Students in this stage study mathematics for three hours each week. Our approach to teaching and learning uses a variety of individual, paired and group work to promote and encourage depth of understanding in each of the four main areas.

In Year 7, students follow an individual progression pathway. This enables them to change teaching groups as their achievement develops in the subject.

At Key Stage 4 we teach the subject in sets. There are two levels of entry to GCSE, depending on each student’s ability; both have four modules, which are assessed though coursework and a module stage examination, with a final examination at the end of the course. The teaching approach is similar to KS3, with an emphasis on building understanding of how different areas of the subject are connected.

We also offer GCSE statistics to our more able students. There are mathematics revision clubs at lunchtimes and we run a very popular mathematics class at Saturday school.
