Science brings together biology, chemistry and physics. Students learn about living things, the elements that make them and the processes that bind them together. They learn how scientific method has enabled great discoveries to be made.
In Year 7 students are taught in flexible mixed ability groups that enable students to follow a personalised route through to Year 9. Setting by ability becomes more established in Years 8 and 9.
We test students every time they finish a unit of work and at the end of every school year. The information gained from the termly testing enables us to make sure that every student makes the best progress they can, in the right group.
We run a science club in Years 7 and 8. It’s very popular, and through it students can take part in the Crest awards scheme run by the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
In Year 9, we provide extra support – mentoring –for students who we assess as being at the borderline between levels 4 and 5 and also for those who have the potential to reach level 7. All students can attend revision classes after school to help prepare them for the Sat test taken at the end of Year 9.
The science course for all Key Stage 4 students leads to two GCSEs – core science and additional science. Some students in the top set may be able to take a third science GCSE.
